When asked about the authority of the Bible, there are 5 very common objections that people raise:

* it’s too old

* there are too many translations

* it has errors

* too many authors

* it’s too exclusive

Maybe you’ve heard these, or even wondered about
them yourself.  For the next two weeks at DV8, we’ll be watching a DVD from Worldview Academy, called “The Seven Habits of High Suppressive People”.

Join Bill Jack and Rusty Carter as they interview people on a college campus, and explore these 5 objections to the authority of the Bible, and also reveal in their interviews what the REAL root problem is.  Don’t miss this short series at DV8, and be a real friend, and find someone to bring with you!

Disciple Now 2008 is just a few weeks away, on November 7th – 9th!  It’s going to be a great weekend of focusing on Christ, making new friends and great memories, and showing Christ’s love through serving.

It starts Friday evening, Nov. 7th (after you drop off your stuff at your host home) with the opening session and supper at the church.  Then we’re heading out to play broomball (this video isn’t us, but you’ll get the idea).

After Saturday morning’s session we’re having lunch (Bear Rock Cafe!), and going out in the afternoon to serve others.  The last session is on Saturday evening, then you’ll come to church Sunday morning with your home group.

Early registration ends on October 12th, when the cost goes up, and registration is over on October 19th.  A $10 deposit reserves your place.  From now on we’re doing DNOW every other year, so don’t miss DNOW 2008!!!

James 3:1-12 deals with our speech, and the fact that it is a clear indicator of our own spiritual health (see James 1:26).  The tongue, though a small part of the body, has great power to wound and even destroy.  It is like fire, which can both benefit and kill, depending on how it’s controlled.

We all have not only found ourselves in trouble because of words we have spoken, but have been on the receiving end of words that wounded us, and though they do heal over time, these wounds never completely go away.  This should make us more careful about the words we speak.

Harsh words, gossip, lying, and outbursts of anger have no place in the life of a follower of Jesus.  But the words are only a symptom of the condition of the heart.  When we develop deep roots in God’s Word and abide with Him daily, and also remind ourselves of the gospel – that God granted us mercy instead of justice, based on the work of Christ at the cross of Calvary – the result is an overflow from our heart that will “impart grace to the hearers” (Eph. 4:29).
